Do you need to buy new office furniture in the latest design in order to add prestige or can you manage with off the shelf units from a local office furniture liquidator at massively discounted prices?

Once you have the answers you can then start to look round for the styles and designs that will give you years of service at a cost that's within your budget. But remember, it's a false economy to shop just on price. Often a slightly more expensive piece will last longer.

• Color matching matters
  Take along a sample of the existing decor so that you can color match in the showroom. Digital photographs or printouts will not be suitable as their color varies wildly.
• Be prepared to bargain
  Haggle for the best price. There's no such thing as a fixed price. If the showroom isn't willing to bend their prices a little then simply walk out and go to the next supplier.
